SWANA Joins National Recycling Leaders at 2019 America Recycles Summit

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) joins national recycling leaders at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2019 America Recycles Summit on November 15, 2019, along with Keep America Beautiful, Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, and The Recycling Partnership.

The Summit will be preceded by an executive-level, invite-only Recycling Roundtable with Administrator Wheeler and key recycling stakeholders, including SWANA Executive Director and CEO, David Biderman, to discuss the issues and opportunities facing American recycling programs in further detail. The Roundtable will include presentations by key EPA officials, open dialogue among participants on their recycling goals, actions that are being taken, needed investment, addressing ongoing challenges, and future collaborative actions that will provide for a stronger U.S. recycling system.

The 2019 America Recycles Summit will reconvene the organizations that signed the America Recycles Day Pledge in 2018 and others to introduce the Framework to Advance the U.S. Recycling System and exchange ideas on additional actions that are needed to improve recycling in America. EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler will join the nearly 200 organizations that have now signed onto the pledge to commit to continue working together to build on their successes and implement the national framework. Biderman will be a panelist at this event where he will discuss recent progress on contamination and share some of the challenges and opportunities facing municipal recycling programs. The 2019 Summit will occur on November 15, 2019, in EPA’s William Jefferson Clinton East Building from 10:00 – 1:00 PM ET. This event is open to the press.

“SWANA is very pleased to be working closely with EPA and other key stakeholders on responding to the recent challenges facing municipal recycling programs, and developing the Framework,” Biderman stated. “There are a number of reasons to be optimistic about the future of recycling in the United States, including the additional domestic capacity being added throughout North America, the reduction in contamination in recycling programs throughout the nation, and the prospect for congressional legislation providing financial support for recycling. Most importantly, the collaborative work being performed by all the components of the recycling supply chain, with EPA’s guidance, will result in a stronger recycling system.”
