Publication date: December, 2012. This report provides solid waste managers with up-to-date information and guidance on options for recycling the organic fraction of the municipal solid waste (MSW) stream.
Interest is growing in the processing and recovery of the organic fraction of the MSW stream for a number of reasons. The organic fraction of MSW ( including food scraps, yard trimmings, wood waste, and mixed paper) is roughly 40 – 60 percent of the waste stream by weight. As a result, the processing and recycling of these materials can play a significant role in the achievement of high waste diversion goals.
