Public Perception of the Waste-to-Energy Industries

Public Perception of the Waste-to-Energy Industries
Additional Information:
This session will specifically discuss the different groups that are publically expressing their opposition to waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities. The session will first focus on the different arguments that opponents are making regarding why these facilities should not be considered as an acceptable means of waste disposal; however, at the same time we will discuss the proponent’s counterpoints. Finally, once the talking points are established, then possible strategies regarding ways to resonantly market the positives of the industry will be discussed.

This step-by-step approach is necessary because the implementation of a WTE facility is a complicated and controversial process that causes many residents to question whether their communities should host these types of facilities. There are multiple groups involved in this argument. While, for example, in Scandinavia there is hardly any public discussion about WTE projects, in the USA there seems to be a lot. And the opponents seem to be the more engaged and more vocal group. As with many discussions with a political touch, there appears to be no middle ground on this controversial issue.
