Registration is now open for SWANA’s International Solid Waste Design Competition (SWDC)! Join us to watch on March 12 and 15 as students from top universities compete for the title and prize. Then join us on March 18 to see who won during the awards ceremony. Student members are then welcomed to join us after the awards ceremony for a Student Networking Event at 11:00 AM ET (look out for a special invite).

This year's project will challenge each team on Solutions for Closing the Bakoteh Dumpsite and Supporting Changes to Modern Solid Waste Management in Kanifing, The Gambia. SWDC Committee and SWANA member, Chris Jimieson, says, “When I visited The Gambia in June 2019, it was clear to me that the solid waste issues facing The Gambia’s largest urban area were challenging, but solvable. I truly feel that the ideas from the Student Design Competition will help to catapult this project to become a reality, and quite possibly, a solution in The Gambia that could someday help other African nations struggling with solid waste management.”

The final schools competing are:

  • Arizona State University
  • National University of Engineering, Peru
  • The University of British Columbia
  • University of Southern California
  • University of Texas at Arlington
  • The University of Vermont
  • Wayne State University

What is the SWDC?

SWANA’s International Solid Waste Design Competition (SWDC) is a student team competition to solve a “real world” problem faced by solid waste professionals. The competition aims at providing design experience for students interested in pursuing an education and/or career in solid waste management. The program provides students with real world experience in solving complex solid waste management issues in a supportive and fun environment, provides students an opportunity to display their talents, and provides a networking opportunity for students to connect with potential employers.
