The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative as part of its strategic plan to reframe the public's perception of the solid waste management industry. As part of SWANA's Young Professional Leadership Academy (YPLA) in 2023, participants are actively conducting research to establish baseline data on industry perceptions, needs, challenges, and opportunities. This research aims to promote sustainable solid waste management practices and education by identifying areas that require more education and outreach. In doing so, SWANA aligns with its strategic plan's Goal 3, which focuses on reframing the industry's perception as an employer of choice.
In recent years, the solid waste management industry has faced a significant challenge in attracting young talent. Skilled trades, including mechanic, driver, and operator positions, have experienced a shortage of qualified individuals. This issue is compounded by the increasing number of retirees and resignations, leaving critical positions unfilled. SWANA recognizes the importance of reframing industry perception to ensure the industry can continue to attract skilled professionals and meet future demands.
SWANA's strategic plan, Forward Together, sets forth a vision to transform the industry's perception by becoming an employer of choice. This objective underlines SWANA's belief that resource management offers desirable jobs and opportunities for professional and personal growth. To achieve this, SWANA has implemented strategies that encompass various facets of the industry.
To effectively reframe public perception and fulfill Goal 3 of SWANA's strategic plan, research plays a pivotal role. The ongoing survey conducted by YPLA participants is a crucial step toward understanding public perception and awareness of the solid waste management industry. By collecting data on public opinions, Young Professionals (YPs) can identify areas where more education and outreach are needed to promote sustainable practices.
The survey's findings will enable YPs to develop targeted strategies to address misconceptions, highlight the industry's positive impact, and showcase the opportunities it offers for professional development and growth. Armed with this data, they can engage in evidence-based advocacy efforts, shape educational programs, and design initiatives to attract and retain young talent.
SWANA's 2023 Young Professional Leadership Academy demonstrates the organization's commitment to reframing the solid waste management industry's perception and becoming an employer of choice. By conducting research to establish baseline data and actively seeking input from members and young professionals through surveys, the YPLA and SWANA aims to gain insights that will guide its educational and outreach efforts.
By aligning with Goal 3 of its strategic plan, SWANA recognizes the importance of attracting and retaining talent in the solid waste management industry. Through the YPLA, collaboration with industry stakeholders, and a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, SWANA aims to reshape public perception, highlight career opportunities, and drive sustainable solid waste management practices for a better future.
