MOLO-Canada Call for Volunteers!

September 23, 2021

SWANA seeks volunteers with experience and expertise in the management of landfill operations in Canada to help develop a Canadian adaptation of the all-new SWANA Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) certification and course, both newly developed in 2021.

Working alongside a consultant who will lead the project, volunteer Subject Matter Experts (SME) will serve on one of two groups – the Course Development Group or the Exam Development Group. Each group of 6-7 SMEs will help produce two key deliverables:

  • Canadian-oriented exam items to be added to the SWANA MOLO Certification, per the standards for developing professional certification exams
  • A Canadian version of the SWANA MOLO-US course that incorporates specific Canadian national and/or provincial standards, practices, technologies, guidelines, and requirements (regulatory and otherwise) for the management of landfill operations in Canada

Volunteers who work in one group cannot work on the other, in keeping with standards requiring separation between certification, training, and course development activities. Further, individuals who serve on the Exam Development Group may not teach the new course for two years.

  • Ideally, the Exam and Course development groups will each include:
    • Up to three (3) SWANA-certified MOLOs who currently manage active and open municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in Canada;
    • Up to three (3) individuals with five to seven (5-7) years of landfill management experience who currently manage active and open MSW landfills in Canada, but who are not yet SWANA-certified MOLOs;
    • At least one (1) representative of the SWANA Landfill Management Technical Division; and
    • At least one (1) Young Professional (<35 years old), who currently manages an active and open MSW landfill in Canada and/or is on a career path leading toward that position.
  • Further and ideally, the Exam Development Group will include:
    • At least one (1) SWANA-certified MOLO course instructor who currently manages an active and open MSW landfill in Canada and agrees not to teach the course for two years after participating on the Exam Group.
  • Further and ideally, the Course Development Group will include:
    • Up to three (3) SWANA-certified MOLO course instructors who currently manage active and open MSW landfills in Canada.
  • An individual may satisfy multiple criteria, e.g., a young professional who serves as a SWANA-certified instructor and is a member of the Landfill Management Technical Division satisfies three criteria.

The project will begin in late-October 2021 and conclude in February of 2022. All work will be completed remotely via a series of weekly or semimonthly virtual meetings. (The frequency of virtual meetings will be determined by each group.)
