SWANA’s Applied Research Foundation Releases FY 2014 Reports

Silver Spring, MD – The Solid Waste Association of North America’s (SWANA) Applied Research Foundation announces the availability of fiscal year (FY) 2014 reports.

Created in the fall of 2000, the Applied Research Foundation (ARF) supports SWANA’s mission of “advancing the practice” of solid waste management through the conduct of collectively-defined and funded applied research projects that address pressing solid waste issues.To date, the ARF has published a total of more than 40 reports.

In FY 2014, four reports were developed with the support and guidance of the 42 ARF subscribing organizations:

Source-Separation and Mixed Waste Recycling Systems: A Comparative Analysis
This report provides recycling managers with up-to-date technical and programmatic information regarding residential source-separation and mixed-waste recycling systems. The costs and diversion rates of systems in Seattle, WA, San Jose, CA, Montgomery, AL and Charlotte, NC are evaluated and compared.

On-Site Treatment of Landfill Leachate
This report provides landfill managers with up-to-date information on conventional and advanced treatment processes that can be utilized for on-site leachate treatment or pre-treatment. The report summarizes the benefits, drawbacks, treatment effectiveness and commercialization status of 28 leachate treatment processes.

Beneficial Reuse of WTE Ash
The 84 WTE facilities in the United States (U.S.) process over 30 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) each year, generate more than 14.5 million megawatt-hours of electricity for sale, and recover more than 730,000 tons of ferrous metal for recycling. This report explores the beneficial reuse of WTE Ash, its regulatory requirements, suitable technologies and processes, and associated costs when compared to the costs of landfilling.

Alternative Landfill Cover Systems
As more MSW landfills reach the end of their service lives, landfill managers are increasingly focusing on what types of final cover systems should be installed at their facilities. This report provides landfill owners and managers with up-to-date technical and programmatic data and information regarding alternative cover systems such as exposed geomembranes and artificial turf systems and compares their benefits, risks, service lives and costs to traditional, prescribed final systems.
