SWANA gave the Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program our 2017 Collection & Transfer Biggest Safety Improvement award. The Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program demonstrated a 41% reduction in recordable injuries from 2015–2016, and a 78% reduction since the program overhaul began in 2013. Incremental improvements to shift the culture resulted in staff seeing that safety matters to their leaders and in recognizing their own integral role in achieving a safe work environment for all.
